Situated only a few roads apart, we stumbled across a small area of Rome that was home to 5, if not more, vegan friendly restaurants. Situated in the Parione district, the Campo de’ Fiori area is a neighbourhood with traditional character, home to a bustling market in the square with numerous tiny side streets weaving and winding.
There are many vegan restaurants scattered across the city, all appearing in many different districts, most of which are miles apart. As this area itself was very close to the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine Hill and so forth, we kept returning day after day.

First on our list was Universo Vegano, a fast food cruelty-free chain eatery that uses only natural ingredients. Using locally sourced produce and many of which are organic, we were blown away by their wide range of choices.
Universo Vegano served a selection of healthy burgers, seeded sandwiches, foccacia, wraps, salads and even soup. In addition, you could order sides of falafel, meatballs and even indulgent desserts such as Vegan Pie, Vegamisu and Friend’s Cookies. They stocked a range of cruelty free beers and wine, organic carbonated drinks as well as fresh juices.
To keep things simple, we both ordered a main. As a lover of falafel, I chose the Vegina Incas, a quinoa and falafel wrap, topped with vegan cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato. Toasted to perfection, this crunchy wrap was flavoursome and balanced. The mayonnaise complimented the ingredients perfectly, adding a hint of sweetness to the savoury filling. The vegan cheese was light and the wrap was firm and crisp, a perfect combination of the two.
Chris chose the Vegan Giotto Spinaci, a tofu and spinach burger topped with vegan mayonnaise, salad and of course dairy free cheese. Instead of a burger bun, this was served in a toasted seeded roll, a nutty compliment to the grassy notes of the spinach. The tofu patty was crisp and delicious, enhanced by the melted cheese and sweet mayonnaise.
To top off our experience, the gentleman who served us was warm, welcoming and a kept his cool in the stressful and busy atmospshere. He was kind hearted and genuine, making our experience just that little bit special!

We loved Buddy cafe so much that we returned twice. Not only offering the best soya cappucino in Rome, the juices were delicious, salads heavenly and raw desserts intensely nutritious! On our first visit we stopped for lunch. With a completely seperate Vegan menu, I had an abundance of dishes to choose from. Raw salads, pizzas, mixed vegetable dishes, curries, you name it they had it! All of which used healthy ingredients, adding superfoods and nuts to keep the nutritious value at a high.
I chose the Energizzante raw salad, with a watercress and spinach base, toasted almonds, pumpkin seeds, avo chunks, cherry tomatoes and an avocado sauce. This huge bowl of wholesome goodness was washed down with an orange, carrot and ginger juice, so vibrant and nourishing.
As traditional as we could get, we sat for a little longer after lunch and ordered a coffee. Their soya cappuccino’s were heavenly! The soya milk was creamy, fluffy and with a hint of vanilla in taste. It wasn’t long before we were rushing back the following day, this time for a cake too. I chose the raw brownie, a nutty take on the chocolate treat, with added goji berries and served with delicate blackberries. If you are a huge fan of nutty desserts then this is for you. It didn’t resonate with the likes of a traditional brownie, however was a nutritious and delicious alternative that made my tummy smile.
Origano Campo De’Fiori

We chose to visit Origano for dinner in celebration of my birthday. They offered a menu suited to meat eaters, veggie’s and vegan’s alike, providing enough choice to keep everyone satisfied. For starters we indulged in the traditional bruschetta, diced tomatoes with basil, olives and a delicious dressing.
I was won over by vegan pizza for the main, a cheese-less, roasted vegetable packed, thin crust bursting with Italian flavour. Topped with aubergine, mushrooms, roasted peppers and fresh basil, this was a light yet wholesome choice satisfying my pizza cravings.
Having quite a sweet tooth, I wasn’t going to settle for a simple sorbet on my birthday. Origano served a vegan upside down apple cake, served with cinnamon apple pieces, fresh strawberries and a caramel sauce. This was delicious, a tiny bit dry but none the less kept its shape with the caramel drizzle. Not too sickly sweet or over indulgent, this was the icing on the cake to a wonderful birthday.

Insalatta Ricca was another restaurant on our list which we unfortunately did not get time to visit. From looking on their menu, they offered a range of vegan-friendly salads, pizzas and pasta dishes that differed from the usual choice of an arrabiata! They did not however offer soya milk for cappuccinos.
